A little butterfly with a journey all her own

Read aloud at the San Antonio Zoo, The DoSeum, Twig Book Shop, Barnes & Noble, and schools across San Antonio

The Book

Bella's Journey

Bella is a tiny monarch caterpillar with big dreams.

She wishes she were as strong as a bear, as fast as a lizard, and as united as the bees in a hive. Everywhere she looks, someone seems to have something she does not.

But as Bella grows from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly, she discovers something even more important: she does not need to be like anyone else.

Bella's Journey combines a real monarch butterfly life cycle with a gentle social-emotional story about identity, patience, growth, and self-worth. It pairs naturally with early science units on metamorphosis and classroom conversations about comparison, courage, and accepting who you are.

Themes for the classroom

  • Self-acceptance and identity
  • Growth through hard, in-between seasons
  • Kindness toward others and yourself
  • Courage and patience
  • Butterfly life cycle and metamorphosis

Meet the Author

Victoria Farias

Victoria Farias is a children's book author, entrepreneur, and mother based in San Antonio, Texas. Bella's Journey is her debut picture book.

The idea for Bella arrived unexpectedly in a doctor's office waiting room.

"I looked up and saw a butterfly hanging from the ceiling, and I started thinking about how much we compare ourselves to others. I stopped scrolling, opened my Notes app, and started writing. That is how Bella's Journey was born."

Since then, Victoria has shared Bella's story with children at the San Antonio Zoo, The DoSeum, Twig Book Shop, Barnes & Noble, Will Smith Zoo School, and classrooms and learning centers across San Antonio.

She writes for the child sitting in the back of the rug who is not quite sure they measure up yet.

"Kids come up to me after readings and tell me they want to write a book someday, or that they have felt like Bella before. Those conversations are everything to me."
